THE ART OF GROWING UP SYLLABUS

In 10 to 14 weekly, two-hour sessions, girls participate in activities and conversation regarding key issues such as self-esteem, identity, and body image. Girls explore how various cultures commemorate the "coming of age" experience by learning artistic traditions related to such ceremonies and celebrations.

Session 2:         Mende Inspired Plaster Mask Making
Session 3:         Mask Painting
Session 4:         Poetry Workshop
Session 5:         Apache Inspired Poetry and Collage
Session 6:         African Dance and Drumming Workshop
Session 7:         Practice Cou-Cou/West African Inspired Dance
Session 8:         Shield Project/Commitment Writing, Prepare for Celebration
Session 9:         Celebration
Session 10:       Evaluation and Relaxation

The closing celebration is a special ceremony where the program participants are welcomed into the young adult community, instilling in them a sense of pride and belonging. The girls' families and friends are invited to join them at this special celebration where they display the artwork they created during the course of the program and affirm their sense of self in front of the larger community.
