Engaging thousands of Philadelphia youth from all races, classes, religions and neighborhoods in a conversation about their visions of peace using art and poetry

What is HeartSpeak?

HeartSpeak, a MasterPeace^TM project presented by the Arts & Spirituality Center, is a citywide initiative which engages thousands of Philadelphia youth from all races, classes, religions and neighborhoods in a conversation about their visions of peace using art and poetry.

Why HeartSpeak?

HeartSpeak gives youth a voice – a chance to be heard - and to make a contribution toward reducing violence and creating peace.

When violence is on the rise in the Philadelphia region, youth are often the ones to be first blamed. However, it is rare that the youth actually get to express how they feel about violence in their neighborhood, how it affects them and what they would do to begin to solve the problem. HeartSpeak will give the city a chance to hear what they have to say.

Main Objectives of HeartSpeak

Art from the Heart of the City and Beyond:

HeartSpeak will provide anti-violence art workshops for thousands of youth from every major region in the city. HeartSpeak will conduct youth arts workshops in:

schools/afterschool programs
community-based programs
faith-based communities
immigrant communities

Technology:

We have developed a Teen Tech Team led by Philadelphia youth that will travel throughout the city to capture the story of HeartSpeak by recording and editing video and audio material from partner sites. This team will also manage the HeartSpeak Blog Talk Radio Show that will be launched in January 2009. For more information about the Teen Tech Team please click here.

Conversation with the Elders:

In partnership with Mothers In Charge, we will provide a recurring arts/poetry workshop for adults that have lost loved ones to violence.

Celebrations and Empowerment:

We want to see our youth shine!! There will be multiple opportunities for youth to express/perform through several small venue performances and local media outlets including radio, television and web stations. There will also be a big culminating Celebration of Peace ceremony in June 2009 where youth participating in HeartSpeak will gather and have the opportunity to perform in front of the entire city.
