PEACE GARDEN
Nurturing healing between recovering addicts and a North Philadelphia neighborhood through flower gardening
A collaboration with addiction recovery community, New Jerusalem Now, their neighbors, and master gardeners from Penn State's Urban Gardens program
The Peace Garden was a collaboration begun by Vic Compher in 2004 as a part of the Arts & Spirituality Center's MasterPeaceTM Initiative. Addiction recovery community, New Jerusalem Now, joined with their neighbors, and master gardeners from Penn State’s Urban Gardens program to build this oasis of flowers in the middle of North Philadelphia. The Peace Garden adjoins Garden for a Recovering World, the tile mosaic mural and sculpture garden created in 2001 and 2002. This vacant lot, once the site of an abandoned house, is now full of perennials planted and cared for by New Jerusalem residents and their neighbors. In June 2005, a youth group traveled from Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ in Madison, Wisconsin to spend a week experiencing life in North Philadelphia. As a service component to their visit, the Wisconsin youth worked with artists Lynn Denton and Claire Brill, as well as New Jerusalem Now friends, to create a mosaic a wall with colorful symbols and the words “Peace Garden,” which is the new name for this enchanting space. They also groomed pathways through the lot. More about related programming: |
